The Registan was the heart of the ancient city of Samarkand of the Timurid dynasty, now in Uzbekistan.
The Registan was a public square, where people gathered to hear royal proclamations, heralded by blasts on enormous copper pipes called dzharchis – and a place of public executions. It is framed by three madrasahs (Islamic schools) of distinctive Islamic architecture. The three madrasahs of the Registan are: the Ulugh Beg Madrasah, the Tilya-Kori Madrasah and the Sher-Dor Madrasah.

Very cool photos.

What a beautiful place. The turquoise domes and tiled motifs on the buildings are fabulous.
What beautiful architecture and coloring of the tiles! I know this is a particularly important complex in the middle of that area, but I wonder if it’s a vast contrast to the rest of the buildings there? It’s really beautiful and the domes are amazing in how they had to have been designed and built.
